Splitting Firewood with an Axe – 2 of 4
There’s a trick to chopping the big ones that just bounce the axe back at you. Chop at it till it starts to crack. Then, use the axe as a wedge. The crackling sound as it splits is hard earned satisfaction.

sharpen that axe it would help alot iv split over 12 cord this year and its alot easyer when they are sharp
I built alot of upper body strength when I was younger with a firewood only heat source and no dad around. =)
come on,put some backpower into it use the axe by itself!
using a real splitting wedge would also make sense.
He is a patent man i will give him that.
god this is soo entertaining to watch, I don’t know why
Stop it, your doing it wrong. Just stop. I mean really If I did some of the stuff you are doing I would have been beat. I can’t believe you didn’t brake the axe or hurt your self.
wow that wood is uber dense
get a wedge and some safety goggles!
Look how many more he has to split. the snow will be flying and he will be on the 3rd stump
At least he has balls to split them by hand. Good Job dog
excelent series on showing the uses of a dull axe, and a maul.
also, not all wood is created equal
it is pretty sad. he’s not standing right, he’s asking to get hit in the face with an axe handle, and he should have just cut those in half with the chainsaw before trying to split them.
Don’t start in the middle. If it won’t split start at the edge and you will usually see a crack after the first hit then work you way across.
With that pile…U need a wood splitter for sure…Is that ash?
It’s from a big old ash tree. I finally got smart and purchased a wood grenade which made ez work of it.
congrats on splitting this friken huge log by hand. Imagine stone tools
I gotta hand it to ya. I didn’t think you were gonna get it in there at 2:34, but you nailed it! Awesome.
what a idiot………
Some fag has to always leave a comment about safety goggles. You split wood all day by hand and lets see if you were emm, about 30 mins in when the sweat is rolling down your face and there fogging up and falling off and getting in the way with every stroke of the axe see if you still have emm on dipshit. Saftey is overrated
That’s a fucking man right there. haha. Kudos for taking on all that by hand dude.
Thank you so much! I chopped wood a couple times 20 years ago and now I’m in Shasta and wood needs to be chopped… or pay for it to be. since I got nothin but time and energy, I wanted to chop wood, but wasn’t sure how to use the tools. This video is a great help for me… THANKS!
@RevinFreddy You are very welcome. I’ve improved my technique since this video. There are wedges (sometimes called “wood grenades”), which if put at the very center of the log’s rings, will split enormous logs with much less effort than in this video. I also use a 10 pound sledge hammer now rather than the 5 pound one here. Happy wood splitting!
@RevinFreddy there is no way that wood will ever split!!
