Splitting Firewood with an Axe – 1 of 4
There’s a trick to chopping the big ones that just bounce the axe back at you. Chop at it till it starts to crack. Then, use the axe as a wedge. The crackling sound as it splits is hard earned satisfaction.

that looks real great til you hit it wrong and get smacked in the face with the axe handle. just buy a wedge…
alot of us don’t have the money to buy a log splitter.
plus they’re slow. i can split twice as much wood in an a hour compared to a log splitter. sure it’s easy, but it’s slow and costly.
Whahaha what a dumb
that’s how it’s done. some times I split wood like that just to be doing something. something about iot just make’s me feel good.. hard work and sweat are their own reward.
a maul does not need to be sharp..go to the hardware store, you will see none of them have a edge..
you have no ideal how many people will not think that is true… mostly ones who don’t split wood.
red necks in MaryLand? well I never knew..lol
we did piles of wood like you have got 20 odd years ago [same method] if only we had known about log spliters then ! was not many about in uk at that time sure would have saved some gravy .
There is an easier way than a wedge. For the ones that bounce back, give your axe about an eighth of a twist on the way down. It will pop them right apart
…looks like your gonna be there a while.
Here’s a few hints. Instead of using the sledge to hit the maul, pick up the piece of wood with the maul and flip it over on the way down and use the force of the wood to split itself on the maul. Using that tool steel on tool steel is a good way to lose an eye.
I know all this because until I was 18, I though my name was get wood.
A Canadian Logger
wow, the last one seems to be very hard
Man, that’s one hell of a pile of firewood. Makes my shoulders hurt just looking at it. : )
Well I shall not lie to anyone, I couldn’t split wood with an axe nor a splitting mall now as I am way to old and in not the best of physical shape any longer but back in the day I gave it a round but in all honestly I wound up beating the hell out of the wood without splitting much
Now give me a couple good old school wedges and a sledge hammer and I could split it like mad. As for the wood splitters being slow, look here on youtube for firewood processors, DAMNNNNN!!!!! Some are FAST!!!!!
I use a 10 pound sledge hammer and wood grenade now. It’s so much easier.
Thats great and all but i see no axe anywhere ?
dude ud be dam strong if u choped every pice in the pile
dumb twat how can u not se it
Open your eyes prickweasel, all that I see is a maul and a sledgehammer, unless you think a maul or a sledgehammer is an axe.. “example” If you hit that wood on the end grain with an axe it would get stuck really bad hence using a maul like the man in this video would be proper for splitting wood..
what kind of wood is it is it pine
It was a big old ash tree. I use a “wood grenade” now. Goes much faster that way.
rednecks got hair like a fuck’n girl.
Looks like a splitting maul and a sledge to me, not an axe anywhere, I am gonna go with 777dmith7777 on this one.
@7777dmith7777 at the very begining he hits the log then hits the axe wih the hammer
Just let your soul glow!
He is a purist and thinks a maul doesn’t qualify…….He also has probably never split ash wood…..
